New studies of the Occident diet provide a rational basis for supplementary dietary advice in the management of acne, consisting of reducing the consumption of hyperglycemic carbohydrates, insulinotropic carbohydrates, and milk proteins. It has been refuted that the role of chocolate is harmless in acne, mainly because of its content of milk, sugar and other components. Alcohol abuse can exacerbate acne and induce cell cycle activators, thereby contributing to epidermal hyperproliferation.

Foods fortified with B vitamins that exacerbate or promote acneiform reactions should be limited.
It is also important to consider the role of probiotics, omega-3 foods, zinc, vitamins A and D, phytochemicals, polyphenols such as green tea, and resveratrol in the acne therapeutic arsenal.
